History

In the 18th century, the south of Limburg – including the area around Wellen – was the scene of the notorious Bokkenrijders, gangs that became notorious for their night-time robberies and extortions.

Who were the Bokkenrijders?

The term "Bokkenrijders" (Goat Riders) refers to both past folklore and historical reality. In folk tales, it was believed that these gangs traveled through the air at night on goats, given to them by the devil himself, so they could move from place to place at breakneck speed.

Historically, the Bokkenrijders were primarily groups of poor farmers and farmworkers, who, driven by poverty and social hardship, resorted to theft and extortion. They primarily attacked farms, churches, and parsonages, sending threatening letters demanding ransom under the threat of fire.

The Bokkenrijders story in Wellen

Wellen was a center of Bokkenrijders activity. From 1773 onward, the gangs made the region unsafe with robberies and arson.

A well-known moment in this history is November 4, 1773, when Jan Corfs's farm was set on fire after he received a arraignment letter. This incident is considered the beginning of the most turbulent period in local history.

Between January 1774 and February 1776, dozens of residents from Wellen and the surrounding area were arrested and tried as suspected Bokkenrijders (Bockriders). Through torture and harsh interrogations, many were forced to "confess" – which later led to harsh punishments, including executions.

Although some stories about the Bokkenrijders were later highly romanticized – with devil's plights and supernatural journeys – modern historians show that it was mainly a combination of social poverty, gang-like criminal acts and folklore that slowly merged into legend.

Cultural heritage

Today, the Bokkenrijders are part of Limburg's cultural heritage. In Wellen, this history is still kept alive through stories, routes, and events.
